We are looking for an innovative private finance operations senior specialist or specialist in Brazil who will (1) identify, originate and design innovative financial operations in Brazil; (2) oversee the MIF’s portfolio in-country, consisting of equity investments (in venture capital funds and direct investments), loans, blended finance, grants; (3) be responsible for the development of impactful knowledge products to promote the MIF’s innovation agenda; (4) work with the Country Office in Brazil to develop strategic inputs to shape the IDBG’s strategic focus in Brazil; (5) handle closely with the CBR and serve as co-lead on key innovation proposals and initiatives.

The team: The Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) serves as an IDBG innovation laboratory to promote development through the private sector by identifying, supporting, testing and piloting new solutions to development challenges and seeking to create opportunities for the poor and vulnerable populations in the LAC region. To fulfill its role, the MIF engages and inspires the private sector and works with the public sector when needed.


What you’ll do:

  • Supervise the implementation of the MIF’s financial portfolio in Brazil, which consists of equity investments in venture capital funds, direct equity investments in early stage firms, loans, quasi-equity and other innovative financial instruments. Provide oversight and technical advice so that portfolio operations achieve their development objectives (impact, innovation), while also generating expected financial returns.
  • Provide strategic mentorship to the CBR portfolio of grants, leading  the implementation of the periodic review of the portfolio, and supervising the implementation of optimization measures, as required, to ensure that the grant portfolio is performing and strategically aligned with MIF and IDBG priorities.
  • Lead the dialogue and direct negotiations with relevant public and private sector partners, including corporate clients, public sector officials, key players in the financial industry and in the innovation ecosystem in Brazil, as well as venture capital fund managers, startups, and other potential clients.
  • Pay attention to the origination of operations that reflect strategic priorities of the IDBG in Brazil, and the thematic priority areas of the MIF; focus on innovation and impact.
  • Lead or participate in project design teams to prepare operations, including due diligence missions, financial modeling and analysis, and financial, credit, and market risk analysis.
  • Contribute to the identification of strategic priorities for the IDBG’s program in Brazil, and to the identification and design of projects within the main MIF thematic verticals.
  • Support initiatives promoted by the Country Office in Brazil, particularly those with respect to the innovation ecosystem in Brazil. This involves an active participation and exploration of alignments with the main ecosystem players, including impactful startups, early stage accelerators, venture capital funds, corporates, key foundations, government, and academia.
  • Support the production of the main knowledge products and the communication strategy in Brazil, so that key messages are disseminated to the most impactful stakeholders and influencers. This will have a particular emphasis on lessons learned from the engagement with venture funds in Brazil.


Skills you’ll need:

Education: You should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent post-graduate degree in one of the following fields: MBA, Economics, Finance, Business, Engineering, or related field, preferably with an emphasis on innovation finance.



  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience working in or supervising venture capital funds and analyzing other financial projects (loans, direct equity in startups/scaleups)
  • Capacity to analyze financial statements of companies, banks, funds, and supervise investments and loans.
  • The capability to monitor and analyze the achievement of complex financial conditions and covenants with financial institutions, venture capital funds, and firms (mostly early stage).
  • Expertise with standard methodologies used in financial projections and risk analysis of portfolio operations (venture capital funds, loans, direct equity).
  • Understanding of the key operational, financial, management/governance and market factors that resolve success in the implementation of financial operations, particularly in the case of venture capital funds.
  • Expertise with standard methodologies used in financial projections and risk analysis of portfolio operations (venture capital funds, loans, direct equity).
  • Experience with development-oriented finance—operations that seek to utilize private-sector driven innovation to generate positive social and environmental impacts, including operations that focus on building private ecosystems for innovation and impact.
  • Specific expertise and knowledge in technology and innovation are a plus (e.g. fintech, agtech, healthtech, or other topics that emphasize tech-driven innovation).


Languages: Fluency of Portuguese is required and oral and written proficiency in English or Spanish.



  • Type of Contract: fixed term, renewable.
  • Length of Contract: three (3) years.
  • Location: São Paulo-SP, Brazil.
  • Supervisor: Dual reporting to the MIF Unit Chief of Loans and Equities and the IDB Representative in Brazil.
  • Requirements: The candidate must be a citizen of Brazil; or be a citizen of one of the Bank’s member countries and have permission to work in Brazil.
