Position Description

We are hiring a Principal for the Relationship Investments group (RI) within our Active Equities department in Toronto. RI makes direct investments in public or soon-to-be public companies in North America and Europe. We provide strategic capital to generate meaningful long-term outperformance via a private equity approach in public markets. Investments range from $100 million to several billion for a 5 – 25% ownership position. Each investment results in an active, ongoing relationship with management teams and typically board representation. The group focuses primarily on funding transformative acquisition opportunities as well as situations involving significant capital markets events (e.g., IPO, recapitalization) or transitions of large ownership blocks. For example, RI has made numerous investments in WSP, an engineering and design services company, to support transformational acquisitions. In total, RI has invested six times helping the company to evolve from a small-cap Canadian engineering services firm to a leading global player. In the case of Advanced Disposal, a US waste management company, we invested pre-IPO via a convertible preferred share instrument to refinance existing shareholders thereby de-risking the future IPO (completed two months following our investment). For more information, please see our website:

You will work with colleagues in small deal teams to:

  • Lead the analysis, evaluation and execution of potential investment opportunities; specifically, evaluating potential direct investment opportunities, conducting research/diligence, developing investment recommendations, negotiating terms and managing transaction processes, and leading the deal through CPP Investments' investment committee process
  • Be a key contributor to Investment Committee discussions
  • Develop close relationships with management teams, provide views on strategic business initiatives and potentially represent CPP Investments on portfolio company boards/committees
  • Monitor ongoing financial and operational performance of investments
  • Identify new investment opportunities or target subsectors for further evaluation
  • Maintain value-added relationships with advisors and industry participants
  • Support the development of a high-performing and diverse team

A particular focus is placed on helping you develop a well-rounded set of skills as an investor and leader with a strong understanding of the deal process from origination through to exit.

Position Requirements

  • Consider applying if you have:
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience including at least 5 years of direct investing experience involving negotiated deals
  • Undergraduate or Masters’ degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics
  • An identifiable track record as a relationship builder and recognized for being immediately impactful
  • Strong deal or project management skills
  • Experience managing relationships with portfolio companies and other stake holders, particularly with C-suite level executives and experience with boardroom situations
  • Worked effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated experience coaching and developing talent
  • A desire to live in Toronto and willingness to travel
  • Great communication (oral, written and as a presenter), interpersonal and relationship building skills
