Debt or Fixed Income bonds are an attractive way for private companies and national governments to raise money whilst still retaining full ownership rights of their institution.

Unlike equity, rather than offering a claim on the title of the company or government's assets, a debt contract is the promise that the money will be repaid at a set time in the future, along with a pre-specified levels of interest at interim periods along the way.

However bonds are rarely held by the bond owner for the full period of the loan and are usually traded on the secondary bond market, providing liquidity to the original bond holder.

Within the bond market, investment banks and corporate financial institutions will act as the underwriters to the bonds, bringing them to market, assuring an agreed level of return for their client.

Roles Within Debt

Debt specialists come in many forms. On the client side, Debt Originators will analyse the needs of the individual clients who wish to raise funds from the fixed income market, and provide in-depth solutions which meet the needs of the client whilst staying within the limitations of the underwriters own risk portfolio.
Structurers will then work underneath the Originators, actually creating the products that have been conceived by the Originator. The syndication desk will then assess the demand, ensure the correct documentation is in place and prepare the product for market.

Fixed Income Traders will work within the secondary market, ensuring a buoyant market for all who wish to invest in this sector while Capital Markets Credit Risk Analysts will be able to provide insight into underlying trends.
