Excluding operational and clerical staff, professionals in hedge funds in London have an average salary of around £77,000, with considerable variation at the top end and substantial potential for bonuses and performance related pay. Hedge funds work in a similar way to asset management firms but tend to be smaller companies and are considerably more performance-oriented. They are also more likely to short sell – to try to make money in falling markets than traditional ‘long only’ asset management firms. Typically, people hired into hedge fund companies will have experience and a track record of success in identifying profitable investment opportunities, either in an asset management company or an investment banking context.
