Summary of the job:

The position of Asset Management Specialist is located in the Bank for International Settlement’s Representative Office for Asia and the Pacific, which is located in Hong Kong SAR. The position reports to the Head of Regional Treasury and Asset Management.

You will establish and maintain long-term partnerships with regional central banks to accommodate demand for the BIS third-party asset management business. You will provide current and potential BIS asset management clients with high-quality services and expert advice.

You will have extensive experience in asset and portfolio management related activities, and be actively involved in the Bank’s portfolio management operations. You will demonstrate the highest level of ethical and business standards in all interactions with clients, service providers and colleagues.

Principal accountabilities:
Portfolio management operations

  • Supports the Senior Portfolio Manager in the Asian office to manage the assigned portfolios and acts as a replacement during absences
  • Implements agreed investment strategies, executes trades and inputs them into trade capture systems
  • Adheres to applicable investment guidelines and internal policies and procedures for dealing in portfolios managed by BIS Asset Management
  • Analyses economics and financial markets to support the investment decision making process

Service existing Asset Management customers and develop new business

  • Provides high quality, tailored asset management services to existing clients in close cooperation with other business units
  • Ensures that each client’s mandate is set up, implemented and managed in accordance with relevant investment guidelines, the client’s risk profile and return expectation
  • Cultivates long-term, strategic relationships with both existing and prospective asset management clients
  • Devises and presents collaborative asset management programmes aimed at Asian central banks

Assist in the coordination of the Asian Bond Fund initiative

  • Represents the Bank at relevant external meetings and report on fund developments
  • Provides regular updates, ad-hoc reports or research on the Asian Bond Fund initiative
  • Monitors the governance of the Asian Bond Fund initiative in cooperation with relevant external parties, and liaise with external managers
  • Analyses the Asian bond markets in order to identify and explain market developments and possible future trends

Deliver reserve management advisory services in Asia

  • Co-ordinates and contributes to the knowledge sharing events organised by Banking Department, covering all aspects related to reserve management
  • Identifies and provides unbiased expert advice supporting the Bank’s asset management activities (such as the extension of the investment process to Asian markets, strategic asset allocation and peer reviews for Asian central banks) in close collaboration with other business units
  • Identifies trends in the Asian reserve management area and contributes to the development of the asset management strategy accordingly

Monitor operational issues

  • Provides knowledge, guidance and support on operational issues related to the Asian Bond Fund initiative and the Bank’s Asian asset management clients to other business units across the Bank
  • Ensures timely delivery of asset management reports to clients
  • Maintains a proactive approach and attitude in establishing and developing good working relationships with units throughout the Bank

Qualifications and work experience:

  • MSc in Economics, Finance or equivalent
  • CFA designation would be an advantage
  • At least five years of experience in asset management and/or reserve management with a focus on Asian markets
  • Experience working for a central bank or an International Financial Institution would be advantageous
