The Associate Director, Europe Trading Oversight will provide an appropriate level of governance and oversight on FIL's Trading Desks to ensure that the firm meets its various regulatory and fiduciary obligations. Additionally, this role leads the ongoing maintenance of and oversight of adherence to internal trading policies and procedures.

Department Description

The Global Trading function is responsible for high quality execution of client orders, and is comprised of 9 Trading desks across 6 locations (London, Dublin, Japan, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Toronto). The desks are responsible for applying a globally consistent trading model to improve scale & efficiency, data aggregation and information sharing and coordinated cross-asset counterparty relationships.

Purpose of the Role

The Associate Director, Europe Trading Oversight will provide an appropriate level of governance and oversight on FIL's Trading Desks to ensure that the firm meets its various regulatory and fiduciary obligations. Additionally, this role leads the ongoing maintenance of and oversight of adherence to internal trading policies and procedures.

Reporting to the Head of Investment Hong Kong, the successful candidate will play an active role in providing oversight and guidance to the Asia Pacific Heads of Trading across all asset classes. The individual will be required to collaborate effectively with their Asia Trading Oversight counterpart to ensure global consistency in approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Actively engage with Heads of Trading (HoTs) and the broader trading team providing prompt, accurate and consistent guidance on matters relating to regulation, FIL's trading desk policies and procedures
  • Keep abreast of regulatory changes and ensure applications to the desks are appropriate
  • Manage the annual review and update of trading desk policies and procedures, providing oversight and ensuring consistent adherence to these
  • Oversee and ensure robust and timely performance of daily Head of Trading reviews of trading activities across Asia Pacific trading desks covering equities, fixed income and FX
  • Work with HoTs to minimise trading error volume, cost, and causes globally. Provide proactive advice and support to the respective HoTs to develop and improve existing controls and processes. Oversee prompt identification and escalation of any risk event. Play an active role in advising the HoTs on designing robust remedial/controls in close partnership with various control functions
  • Facilitate and lead the assessment of the delivery of best execution
  • Escalate issues to the Head of Investments Hong Kong, and appropriate governance forums
  • Assist with collating management information and reports, as required, including papers for oversight forums and board presentations
  • Represent the Asia Trading desks at appropriate internal forums and committees
  • Partner closely with the compliance function, including the advisory and monitoring teams to ensure consistency of oversight and interpretation

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • Previous experience gained in a compliance, or trading support function
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the trading process and regulatory environments (including securities regulation knowledge) for Hong Kong, Japan, Shanghai and the pan Asia markets we trade in
  • Good knowledge on various trading related tools and platforms such as Charles River, Bloomberg and other platforms
  • Good knowledge of equity and fixed income markets and trading environments
  • A genuine interest in the investment process and trading
  • Investigative and questioning nature, analytical and a self-starter;
  • High attention to detail
  • Good planning, prioritisation, problem solving and organisational skills
  • Confident personality and comfortable speaking up
  • Conservation starter and discussion facilitator
