Project Manager, Rugby World Cup 2019 (2 years contract)


The Communication department of Societe Generale Asia-Pacific (APAC) is ensuring:

  • The definition and implementation of the Communication strategy in the region (approx. 8,000 staff across 12 countries), in line with Societe Generale group communication and Asia-Pacific overall strategy and objectives;

  • The promotion of Societe Generale's brand, culture, values, and business expertise to its internal and external stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region;

  • The support of its business activities, principally in Financing & Advisory, Global Markets and Investor solutions, Asset Management, and Transaction Banking.

The Communication department consist of a regional team based in Hong Kong and dedicated teams in key regions: China, India, Japan, and Singapore for SE Asia. The department is structured around the following activities:

  • Branding & advertising;

  • Partnerships & citizenship;

  • Media relations;

  • Editorial & digital communication;

  • Events.

Societe Generale is one of the 6 Worldwide partners of Rugby World Cup 2019, taking place in Japan, with exclusive communication rights on the banking and financial sector.

Role summary

Based in Hong Kong, working under the supervision of the Head of Communication - APAC, the RWC Project Manager is responsible for developing and implementing the regional communication plan for Rugby World Cup 2019, in coordination with global and regional communication teams, the RWC organizing committee, and relevant supporting agencies, on three main pillars:

  • Promote brand awareness / image;
  • Support and enhance client relations;
  • Generate staff engagement.

The position is a temporary mission, starting in Q1 2018 and finishing 31 December 2019.


Main responsibilities

The scope of responsibility covers managing and coordinating the regional RWC communication plan, as well as defining and supporting usage of RWC assets by any SG business line or department, in strong collaboration with all communication teams and experts, whether local or global.

  • Positioning / Corporate story / Key messages:

    • Contribution to defining posture of communication plan

    • Production of RWC presentations

    • Definition of key messages

  • Promotion of brand awareness / image:

    • Custodian of RWC brand guidelines and ensure activation of any usage, incl. approval process

    • Implementation of "above the line" RWC advertising plan (Japan, Asia-Pacific)

    • Management of "below the line" usage of visual identity e.g. merchandising products, collaterals etc.

    • Initiating and production of content using Rugby and Rugby World Cup, to be used on all possible SG media channels

  • Support and enhance client relations:

    • Management of the RWC client hospitality programme: definition of the experience, identification and coordination of relevant stakeholders/vendors

    • Programme delivery during Rugby World Cup

    • Contribution to identify client-dedicated business events during Rugby World Cup

  • Generate staff engagement:

    • Define and manage RWC staff engagement programme in Japan and across Asia-Pacific, allowing to create awareness, adhesion and pride

    • Coordination of staff events, in collaboration with HR and Staff Engagement Committee

    • Participation at the editorial committee to generate rugby / RWC-dedicated content

  • Management of RWC assets, including:

    • Management of RWC tickets

    • Management of RWC brand ambassadors

    • Encourage RWC usage by creating a tool-kit supporting activation in line with strategic framework and RWC guidelines

  • Monitoring and strategy:

    • Monitor RWC communication plan budget

    • Define KPI and metrics

    • Follow-up and regular reporting on RWC communication activity and impact

      The role implies also to assist the other Communication team members across Asia-Pacific as and when required.



  • Proven record in developing and implementing transversal communication strategies (using different channels, targeting different audiences, and promoting a wide range of image items)
  • Experience in project management

  • Experience in handling global sporting event projects is a plus

    Strong knowledge of the financial industry

    Hands-on approach yet with good sense of strategic use of communication

Education & experience

  • University degree:

    • Marketing and/or Communication and/or Literature degree

  • Professional experience, among the following:

    • Communication or marketing department in listed companies

    • Specialised communication agencies

    • Project management roles handling regional Communication projects


  • Fluency in English

  • Other languages, e.g. French, Japanese, Cantonese… is a plus
