Global Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group's reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all global businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.

We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as Senior Legal Counsel.

Principal responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, advice, guidance, support, training to lawyers to drive the implementation and institutionalisation of the operational risk management framework and management of legal risk
  • Provide subject matter and regional expertise to the central team in the formulation of standards, policies, procedures and controls for the management of risk and the implementation of the framework, working on global projects as required
  • Be the main contact between Operational Risk team and lawyers, and support lawyers on key Operational Risk projects
  • Build a strong relationship with country General Counsels, and gain a complete understanding of the legal department and legal risk environment in countries in Asia
  • Identify gaps and additional training or other requirements, and proactively take steps to rectify, identify and communicate current and emerging risks and issues and best practices across Asia Pacific, with other Stakeholders and with the central team
  • Assist in assurance reviews as required
  • Undertake a monitoring and oversight role in respect of the management of risk within the legal function and an oversight role in respect of legal risks in the businesses, functions across Asia Pacific

  • Qualified Lawyer with practical in house legal experience. Audit, Risk or Compliance experience
  • Good knowledge of the HSBC Group corporate structures, its business and personnel and a clear understanding of HSBC's corporate culture
  • Good organizational skills and ability to prioritise
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal and strong interpersonal skills
  • Lateral thinking and problem solving
  • Language skills an advantage
  • Strong data management and technology skills
