The majority of information services jobs found in this sector are based within companies that provide information to the financial services industry.
Successful candidates for information services jobs understand that accuracy is paramount, and a keen attention to detail is of the utmost importance.
Jobs within information services typically come from two key areas, either from credit rating agencies or data providers.
Credit Rating Agency Opportunities
A credit rating agency provides an opinion (a ‘rating’) on the likelihood that any debt issued by a borrower will be serviced and repaid according to its schedule.
These ratings cover the companies and governments that borrow, as well as individual bond issues. Such ratings offer any interested party a clear opinion on overall creditworthiness.
The best ratings available are triple A, and the most well-known agencies providing these ratings are Standard & Poor’s, Moody's and Fitch.
To come up with a rating, the credit ratings agencies employ a vast number of analysts looking at all the relevant information. This team ranges from junior analysts, who might be responsible for collecting and collating the data, through to senior analysts tasked with interpreting the results.
Many analysts will have sector experience, enabling them to understand the intricacies of a specific industry. But all have keen qualitative minds able to interpret results with accuracy.
Working with Data Providers
In contrast, the data providers issue data with no interpretation.
Their responsibility is to provide real time, accurate data, usually on a continuous feed.
Companies such as Thomson Reuters and Bloomberg lead this field, with others like Markit, Dealogic and Initiative Europe also used by many.
Within data providers, graduates usually enter as data analysts, with a view to working their way through to management positions such as the Head of Market Data.
However there are also opportunities within the bigger data providers in journalism, IT and business development, as well as in operations departments including HR and technical support.
