(Associate) Banking and Finance Transactions Lawyers
The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for Legal Directorate (JU) - Legal Department, Corporate (CORP) - Mandates and Financial Instruments Division (MFI Division) at its headquarters in Luxembourg, two (Associate) Banking and Finance Transactions Lawyers. These are full time positions at grade 4/5.

The term of this contract will be 4 years.
Panel interviews are anticipated for mid January 2021.
The EIB offers fixed-term contracts of up to a maximum of 6 years, according to business needs, with a possibility to convert to a permanent contract, subject to organisational requirements and individual performance.

As an (Associate) Banking and Finance Lawyer, internally referred to as (Associate) Officer Legal Services, you will provide legal advice in respect of the mandates entered by the EIB with third parties for the purpose of achieving common objectives or other matters falling within the competence of the Division. This includes drafting, negotiating and advising on the implementation of mandates and guarantees from the European Commission to the EIB as well as on mandates provided by the EIB to the European Investment Fund (EIF).

Operating Network
You will act under the authority of the Head of Division, in collaboration with the other lawyers of the MFI Division and in accordance with the priorities established by the Head of Division (in coordination with the Head of Department). You will also work in collaboration with other teams within the Bank, such as Operations and Mandate Management.
You will be in contact with various counterparts, e.g. the European Commission, the EIF, Member States, external legal counsel, etc.

You will carry out work relating to the management of EU budget funds by the EIB and the provision of mandates to the EIF in order to protect the Bank's legal interests together with other tasks within the Division's remit and will independently manage the relevant dossiers.
You will operate under the supervision of the Head of Division or a senior lawyer, whose instructions you will follow when taking care of complex issues and whose approval you will seek on fundamental or unusual matters.
You will:
  • Draft mandate agreements (including guarantee agreements) for new mandates and amend existing mandate agreements;
  • Take a leading role in negotiations with the European Commission, the EIF and other external counterparts;
  • Advise operations colleagues on implementation questions arising from mandates;
  • Liaise where necessary with external consultants and supervise their work;
  • Undertake a variety of other tasks related to mandate creation and implementation;
  • Contribute to research on legal matters relevant to the Bank's interests;
  • Develop and maintain relationships within the Bank and represent the EIB externally; and
  • Actively contribute to knowledge sharing within the team.

  • University degree in law (preferably at Master level) or an equivalent qualification;
  • A professional qualification or experience in either common law or civil law;
  • Minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in the field of banking and finance acquired with a law firm of international reputation or the in-house legal department of a financial institution. Experience in guarantees and risk sharing instruments, whilst not necessary, would be an advantage;
  • Significant expertise in drafting and negotiating finance documents in English;
  • Very good knowledge of standard IT tools;
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and a good command of French (*). Knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage.

(*) There may be certain flexibility on this requirement, but limited to particularly suitable candidates who may not yet be proficient in French. If selected, such candidates will be hired on the condition that they build up rapidly knowledge of French and accept that their future career in the EIB may be subject to the attainment of sufficient proficiency in both of the Bank's working languages
