About the Company

Our client a Singapore-headquartered corporate services company providing accounting, corporate, and business support services to local and international clients.

As part of our expansion, we are establishing a new office in Malaysia and are looking for a strong accounting professional to join us at an early stage and help build and manage our Malaysia accounting function.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accountant who enjoys working in a professional-services environment, managing a portfolio of clients, and taking ownership of accounting matters from start to finish.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Accountant with audit or full-set accounting experience and a professional accounting qualification such as CPA, CA, ACCA, or equivalent.

The ideal candidate will have experience gained from a Big 4 firm, international accounting/advisory firm, corporate services provider, accounting outsourcing firm, or similar professional-services environment.

The successful candidate will initially be hands-on and will have the opportunity to take a key role in establishing and developing the Malaysia office's accounting operations.

Key Responsibilities

Full-Set Accounting

  1. Manage and prepare full sets of accounts for a portfolio of Canadian companies.
  2. Handle the complete accounting cycle, including:
  3. Accounts payable and accounts receivable
  4. General ledger
  5. Bank and balance-sheet reconciliations
  6. Fixed assets
  7. Accruals and prepayments
  8. Intercompany transactions
  9. Month-end and year-end closing
  10. Prepare monthly management accounts, financial reports and accounting schedules.
  11. Prepare financial statements and supporting working papers.
  12. Maintain accurate and complete accounting records.

Client Accounting & Corporate Services

  1. Manage accounting portfolios for multiple corporate clients.
  2. Communicate directly with clients and understand their accounting and reporting requirements.
  3. Coordinate with auditors, tax agents, company secretaries, banks and other professional advisers.
  4. Ensure accounting deliverables are completed accurately and within agreed deadlines.
  5. Assist clients with accounting-related queries and provide practical solutions.
  6. Review accounting work prepared by junior team members where required.

  1. Support preparation of information required for tax, statutory and regulatory filings.
  2. Keep up to date with relevant Malaysian accounting, tax and regulatory developments.
  3. Support audit processes and respond to auditor queries.
  4. Assist with the implementation of appropriate accounting processes and controls for the new Malaysia office.

Group / International Accounting

  1. Work closely with the Singapore headquarters and regional management team.
  2. Support accounting and reporting for Singapore–Malaysia cross-border activities.
  3. Assist with intercompany accounting and reconciliations.
  4. Support group reporting and consolidation requirements where applicable.
  5. Liaise with international clients and stakeholders, including North American clients.

Office & Team Building

  1. Play a key role in establishing the Malaysia accounting function.
  2. Develop accounting processes, workflows and internal controls.
  3. Assist in selecting, training and supervising junior accounting staff as the Malaysia office grows.
  4. Contribute to the development of the firm's accounting and corporate-services offering in Malaysia.
  5. Take on additional responsibilities as the Malaysia business expands.

Requirements

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline.
  2. Professional accounting qualification strongly preferred, such as: CPA, CA, ACCA or equivalent
  3. Ideally 2-3 years of relevant accounting experience, although exceptional candidates with less experience may be considered.
  4. Strong hands-on experience managing full sets of accounts.
  5. Experience in a Big 4 firm, professional accounting firm, corporate services firm, accounting outsourcing firm, or similar environment is highly preferred.
  6. Strong understanding of financial reporting and accounting standards.
  7. Experience preparing management accounts and statutory financial statements.
  8. Experience dealing with auditors and tax advisers.
  9. Strong Microsoft Excel skills and familiarity with accounting software.
  10. Excellent written and spoken English.
  11. Strong attention to detail, analytical ability and organisational skills.
  12. Able to work independently and take ownership of client portfolios.
  13. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

Strongly Preferred

The following would be advantageous:

  1. Experience servicing international / multinational clients.
  2. Experience with Singapore and/or Canadian clients.
  3. Knowledge of Canadian accounting or financial reporting practices.
  4. Experience with cross-border accounting between Singapore, Malaysia and North America.
  5. Previous experience in an accounting outsourcing or corporate-services environment.
  6. Experience supervising or mentoring junior accountants.
  7. Experience helping to establish accounting processes for a new office or business unit.
  8. Familiarity with cloud accounting platforms such QuickBooks online
