Researcher is AMRO’s entry-level economist position, for applicants with work experience of up to 5 years. Applicants for this particular position should have strong data science and economics/finance background; work experience is not mandatory albeit an advantage. The successful candidate will report to the Group Head of Financial Surveillance.

Main responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting multilateral surveillance activities by participating in macro-financial research projects, contributing to the flagship publication, and capacity-building activities;
  • Contributing to cross-country analyses of economic and financial systems and the real economy;
  • Contributing to research by extracting, organizing, distilling, and analyzing “big data” from a variety of sources, undertaking econometrics and other quantitative work, implementing machine learning techniques, etc., and producing associated analytical reports;
  • Contributing to the development of macro-financial surveillance frameworks as well as establishing easy-to-use datasets from “big data” or unstructured data relating to ASEAN+3 economies;
  • Contributing to the automation of analytical tools and development of visualization dashboards for analytical outputs;
  • Helping to provide logistical and administrative support for the publication of the flagship report and related outreach events, as assigned by supervisor;
  • Undertaking any other assignment assigned by supervisor or Senior Management.

 

The candidate should possess:

  • A Ph.D. or Master’s degree in the field of macroeconomics, finance, public policy, data science, or related fields, from a reputable university; applicants who are near completion of their degrees should provide academic transcripts and any other relevant information—any offer of a position will be contingent on completion of a degree;
  • Strong analytical ability and capacity to conduct rigorous macro-financial research; knowledge of economic, market, and policy developments in Asian economies would be a big plus;
  • Some experience in the field of data science, notably, extracting, cleaning, and analyzing “big data,” web scraping, etc.; previous policy experience, via an internship or a junior role, at an international organization or official sector agency would be viewed favorably;
  • Proficiency in software applications such as Microsoft Office; high proficiency in programming in languages such as R, Python, Matlab, SQL, as well as econometric packages such as Stata, EViews;
  • Proficiency with data visualization tools, such as Google Data Studio, Tableau, Microsoft Power BI;
  • Strong motivation and initiative; be results-oriented and accountable for the accuracy of both data and information;
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills to interact effectively with staff and officials of diverse cultural backgrounds at all levels;
  • High proficiency in written and spoken English.
