The China Desk Economist will report to the Surveillance Group Head who is the Mission Chief for China. The candidate should have strong expertise in macroeconomic surveillance and be knowledgeable about the Chinese economy. Strong communication and coordination skills are also essential.

Main responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Assisting his/her Group Head in the planning and implementation of the group’s work plan in support of AMRO’s overall goals, ensuring efficiency, relevance, and impact of AMRO’s surveillance work;
  • Being responsible for conducting surveillance of China including:
  • - collecting data, monitoring, and analyzing developments in China, at both the country and sectoral levels;
  • - identifying risks and vulnerabilities facing China, and formulating policy recommendations to address them;
  • - drafting briefing notes for management and for annual consultation and interim visits;
  • - developing work programs, and participating in annual consultations and preparing initial drafts of country consultation reports;
  • - providing regular updates to his/her Group Head and senior management on emerging events and issues in China;
  • - conducting research pertaining to the Chinese economy;
  • Contributing to region-wide surveillance and country surveillance activities of other ASEAN+3 economies as assigned;
  • Collecting and managing relevant data from the ASEAN+3 authorities, IFIs, private sector, and other data sources;
  • Supervising and guiding research analysts and associates;
  • Maintaining good relations with the authorities and liaising with authorities on relevant surveillance matters between AMRO and China, as well other member economies;
  • Assisting Group Heads in dealing with various related issues of strategic importance;
  • Conducting other ad-hoc tasks as assigned by his/her Group Head or Senior Management.

 

The candidate should possess:

  • A Ph.D. or Master’s degree in economics, or related fields, from a reputable university;
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience and knowledge in economics and/or finance, including macro-financial modeling and policy; experience in relevant international organizations/ government agencies/ central banks would be a significant advantage;
  • Strong analytical ability and capacity to conduct rigorous research;
  • High levels of familiarity with the Chinese economy and associated policies; experience in macroeconomic, financial, and fiscal sector surveillance and empirical research, as well as knowledge about capital flow management measures and macro-prudential policies, would be a significant advantage;
  • High level of familiarity with China databases such as Wind and CAIXIN;
  • Strong familiarity with key third-party economics and finance databases, such as Bloomberg, CEIC, Haver Analytics, Refinitiv (Datastream), would be an advantage;
  • Proficiency in software applications such as Microsoft Office and high proficiency in the application of econometric packages, such as EViews, MATLAB, Stata; proficiency in programming in languages such as Python and R would be beneficial;
  • Strong motivation and initiative, and be results-oriented and accountable for the accuracy of both data and information;
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and presentation skills to interact effectively with staff and officials of diverse cultural backgrounds at all levels;
  • High proficiency in written and spoken English; proficiency in written and spoken Chinese would be an advantage.
