Position Description:

CME Group is seeking a high quality, results-oriented market data lawyer to join our in-house legal team. The successful candidate will be joining CME Group at an exciting time for the Global Data Licensing Services business. The Global Data Licensing Services team has grown significantly throughout 2017 and now requires a lead market data specialist lawyer to lead legal support to the business, covering all legal and regulatory aspects of its Core Data & Compliance and Derived Data licensing business.

The Director and Assistant General Counsel will lead in the provision of specialist market data advice and provide guidance to the business and legal team colleagues in the UK, USA and Asia to provide legal support to the Global Data Licensing Services business including:

  • Determining appropriate licensing approaches and models to balance the commerical objectives of the business against relevant legal risks in key locations
  • Drafting and maintaining standard form market data and derived data licensing agreements
  • Providing legal and regulatory advice to the strategy and policy team in relation to new market data licensing programs and initiatives
  • Advising on the transfer of customers on legacy agreements to current standard forms
  • Supporting the customer aduit program, including drafting of NDAs and negotiation of settlement agreements
  • Providing legal and regulatory guidance regarding unlicensed market data use
  • Providing guidance on current and pending laws and regulations that impact market data licensing (e.g. Benchmark Regulations, GDPR, Competition and Intellecutla Property law)

The Legal department is a fast-paced environment offering opportunities to gain exposure to many aspects of CME Group's business and to work with CME Group colleagues and customers globally. The position will include some travel between our Belfast, Chicago, London and New York locations. As well as excellent technical expertise in market data, the successful candidate must have excellent communication skills, work with integrity and conviction, and be able to interact confidently with internal and external customers at all levels of seniority. 

Minimum Qualifcations

  • Member of the Illinois or New York bar in good standing
  • 7+ years experience as a practicing attorney in legal issues relating to market data licensing
  • Experience of negotiating intellectual property license agreements, services agreements and other commercial agreements
  • Knowledge of antitrust issues relevant to market data licensing, relevant areas of commercial law, with financial regulations and regulatory frameworks preferred
  • Extensive familiarity with the US and EU licensing agreements
  • Experience at a top law firm preferred
  • Experience working cross divisionally to a mid to large size company
  • Experience working with internal and external customers, preferably internationally
  • Excellent negotiating, drafting, analytical and written and oral communication skills
