The Innovation Engineer for Barclays UK (BUK) will work in parallel with the BUK Support Officers to ensure that both Innovation opportunities and potential solutions, receive the optimal level of technical scrutiny and assurance. Specifically, the Innovation Engineer (IE) will work with the Business to understand their existing technical landscape and roadmap and to identify the opportunities that exist within this context.

Overall purpose of role

The Innovation Engineer for Barclays UK (BUK) will work in parallel with the BUK Support Officers to ensure that both Innovation opportunities and potential solutions, receive the optimal level of technical scrutiny and assurance. Specifically, the Innovation Engineer (IE) will work with the Business to understand their existing technical landscape and roadmap and to identify the opportunities that exist within this context.

Additionally, the IE will lead on the technical assessment of potential solution providers from both within the rise Network and externally - the IE will be expected to proactively help identify and engage with best in class solution options and help bring into our network

This role is key in helping to identify and shape solutions which 1) offer step change value opportunities for the UK Business and 2) are pitched at an appropriate level to maximise the chances of technical integration and successful implementation

Key Accountabilities

  • Help understand and articulate the technical landscape within the UK Business -work closely with technical leads from accross BUK to help Identify key opportunities and limitations for Innovation.
  • Lead the review of solution options - be the technical lead to help assess the relative capabilities / USP of competing providers
  • Engage with best in class solution providers and help ensure the Coverage team have sight of new opportunities and capabilities
  • Support BUK in assessing disruptive threats and trends; provide them with balanced perspectives and opportunity assessments
  • Support Brand and Reputation objectives through external events to aid talent attraction ⁄retention and improve client perception
  • Support Social and Community impact including RegTech and GovTech connectivity to appropriate functions
  • Help represent Coverage at Innovation Forum(s), Council engagements and ad hoc events
  • According to needs, provide active engagement with external sources of innovation made visible group-wide (start-ups, academics, vendors, partners)

Stakeholder Management and Leadership

Internal Stakeholders

The Innovation Engineer will partner with the Innovation Support Officers who directly interface with Senior Leadership from across the UK Business. Additionally the Innovation Engineer will maintain direct relationships with technical leads and senior stakeholders as required to help establish and deliver innovation needs. To establish and maintain credibility the relationships will need to be at both a technical and interpersonal level -reflecting sound understanding of the underlying business, customer and clients, processes and activities, as well as constraints and contextual considerations. The role holder will need to convey innovative approaches to problem-solving to Barclay's leaders. Capability to build working relationships with SME's - including structuring and providing technical expertise and insight at BU Innovation forums - will be required.

External Stakeholders

The Innovation Engineer will be required to establish technical credibility with External Stakeholders. The stakeholders will include serial entrepreneurs, new entrants, large Corporates (Clients and Suppliers), Venture Capital Partners and Portfolio Companies, Regulators and Government.

Technical credibility will need to be underpinned by strong communication skills, commerciality and personal energy.

Decision-making and Problem Solving

The Innovation Engineer should demonstrate a strong understanding of innovation themes and emerging technologies and their applications. This grasp of the subject will facilitate clear communication of the opportunity it presents. Current thematic areas of knowledge would include (but not limited to):

  • Data Management
  • Cloud and Agility
  • Internet of Things
  • Block chain
  • AI/Machine Learning, Machine Intelligence,
  • Robotics

The Innovation Engineer will be expected to show fine judgement on the applicability of such technologies to real-world challenges. This demands a clear understanding of both the business problem and opportunity ('the heart of the issue') and the reality of production deployments of emergent capabilities. This judgement will necessarily involve vested stakeholders -both pulling and pushing for certain outcomes. Working with BUK leaders and Innovation Products, the IE will guide the assembly of the right solutions through experimentation and partnership.

Person Specification

  • Technically very strong - able to quickly identify and articulate the relative merits and value of competing technical solutions
  • Strong understanding of constituent parts of the Barclays UK as well as Transaction Cycles and Functions, be very beneficial
  • Able to communicate to wide range of stakeholders - the ability to explain more complex technologies in an accessbile format will be a significant advantage
  • Demonstrable experience of legacy environments, constraints, and impediments to change in order to have perspective and insight on challenges
  • Demonstrated strong understanding and communication skills pertaining to new technologies, business models and the application thereof to drive commercial success
