Department Profile

Morgan Stanley’s Prime Brokerage business provides sophisticated global products and services to performance-oriented money managers who run some of the largest and most successful hedge funds. Morgan Stanley acts as a Prime Broker for hedge funds to consolidate, finance, clear and report daily trade activity across multiple products. MS PB is the global leader in terms of market share, and a significant proportion of the business is made up of European and Asian clients who are serviced by the International Prime Brokerage division (IPB).

The Role of the Prime Broker:

Prime brokers have historically supported the hedge fund industry in a number of ways, namely:

  • Offering cash financing, securities lending and custodial services.

  • Assisting with the hedge fund’s capital raising activities.

  • Clearing and settlement of trades executed with the prime broker’s own broker-dealer or other executing brokers

  • Via technology which is available to support the hedge fund throughout the entire investment cycle – research, execution, risk management, settlement and clearance and advice on “best of breed” third party solutions.

  • Specialist Client Service group to assist in day to day management of the fund.

As the demands of hedge funds have evolved, so too have services provided by the prime broker. Today, Morgan Stanley Prime Brokerage supports clients across a wide range of trading strategies from the more traditional equity long/short to credit strategies and multi-strategy with managers trading equity, credit default swaps, index futures and global distressed debt.

Background on the Team

A new opportunity has arisen in the International Prime Brokerage Financing / Business Management team. The team comprises of four full-time employees and an Industrial Placement student and reports directly to the head of the European Prime Brokerage business. We work closely with colleagues in the Equity Swaps, Listed Derivative and OTC Derivative Financing teams, with all departments within the IPB business including Sales, Client Coverage and Risk, and other businesses within Morgan Stanley including Treasury and Stock Lending.

Primary Responsibilities

The team has responsibility for a wide range of areas, including the following aspects of the European and Asian Prime Brokerage business:

  • General business oversight responsibility (which covers areas such as optimal management of our funding book and liquidity management).

  • Responsibility for our client pricing process, considering how best to price our broad spectrum of hedge fund clients and the management of our cash financing and billing platform.

  • Management of our asset utilisation programme with a particular focus on P&L maximisation and risk control.

  • Management of department P&L and client profitability analysis.

  • Detailed analysis of business trends to aid senior management decision making.

  • Development of management reporting to aid the strategic management of the business.

  • Close involvement in other strategic business initiatives (focused notably on P&L initiatives, balance sheet reduction and regulatory requirements)

The candidate will be exposed to all areas that the team focuses on and will assume responsibility for both day-to-day management of business functions and gain responsibility for a number of longer-term strategic projects. The role will involve daily contact with senior business managers globally.

Qualifications:

The role would suit a recent graduate or a candidate with some financial experience, potentially from an Operations or Finance background:

  • solid academic record with good numerate qualifications and a talent for practical application (Bachelors Degree in Economics/Business/Finance/Accounting or equivalent).

  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Access & Excel.

  • Analytic mindset, excellent problem solving ability and close attention to detail.

  • Strong communication skills and an ability to articulate complex situations clearly.

  • Must be a team player who demonstrates perseverance and ambition and has a keen commercial sense.

  • Ability to think outside the box – a maturing business requires new precedents to be set and new problems to overcome.

  • Good project management and time management skills.

  • Flexible approach to working hours.

  • Importantly, an eagerness to learn and a desire to develop both themselves and a world-class business.
