My client, a leading financial markets and commodities bank are seeking a Product Controller to join their team. Reporting into the Commodities Product Control Manager, this role is responsible for the product control ledger reconciliation process and ensuring that all reconciliations/processes surrounding the generation of the books and records is done to a sufficient standard, and adequately documented. Furthermore, this includes the production of daily P&Ls and Balance sheet substantiation for the physical oil area; as well as training and development of junior staff. This is a hands-on role with active involvement in the daily and monthly Product Control processes.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Subject matter expert for the product Control and wider Finance team on all physical oil activities 
  • Responsible for  production of the Daily P&L, including analysis and explanation
  • Balance sheet validation ensuring completeness, accuracy & integrity of the ledger
  • Liaison with Front Office and other support functions
  • Continuous evaluation and improvement of current processes
  • Identify issues (accounting, booking, valuation, processes etc) before they become major issues, and suggest ways to remedy
  • Work with the Product Control MIS team to ensure that all books are reflected correctly in the departmental MIS reporting and that all central processes and controls are adhered to.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree Education from first or second tier University.
  • (Part) Qualified Accountant an advantage

Experience required to successfully perform this role

  • 2y+ years’ Product Control or trading assistant experience on crude products or refinery desk at a major oil trading company (Bank or trading house)
  • North American market knowledge an advantage
  • Exposure to inventory storage and pipeline management preferred
  • Good trading lifecycle knowledge of both physical oil and oil derivatives
  • Good relationship building skills and ability to face off to other functions and be assertive 
  • Experience of source system reconciliations
  • Ability to manage upwards as well as to manage and delegate downwards
  • Ability to understand and break down complex issues into simple concepts

Knowledge and technical skills

  • Solid Excel knowledge
  • Self-driven, with enthusiasm to learn

  • Good understanding of the front to back Product Control operating model
