BPDTS. Digital People.

We are looking for emerging Software and Application Engineers to join our Integration team.

This is a junior or entry level role. You'll be working with OpenTest Exstream, but we don't expect you to be an expert at this stage in your career. What you don't know, we will teach you.

BPDTS Ltd provides dedicated services to the Department for Work and Pensions. Our digital, data and technology specialists work closely with experts in DWP Digital's community to make digital services quicker, simpler and more efficient for the millions of people that use them.

In BPDTS our people are our biggest asset. We harness and develop their expertise so we can design, build and run secure and intuitive digital services used by 20 million UK citizens, often during critical times in their lives.

You and your role

You'll be working on one of our flagship digital projects, delivering Personal Independence Payments (PIP) products and services with and for DWP.

You'll be part of a small team initially, responsible for the development of notifications generated by the PIP system. This may be expanded to development of notifications for other systems. Your work will transform how users and government interact and will impact many millions of people.

You'll be a great fit for our team if you have a positive outlook and an insatiable appetite for learning new skills, independently and by collaborating with the digital experts you'll have around you as part of our agile, multi-disciplinary teams.

Your work will include:

  • You will support the analysis of problems and programming approaches to prevent rework and schedule slippage.
  • You'll help make recommendations on development of new code or reuse of existing code.
  • You will help us to transform business requirements into technical solutions
  • You'll be building and testing Exstream applications
  • You'll contribute to the completion of unit testing and support system and integration testing.
  • You will develop and configure custom components

What skills, knowledge and experience do you need?

It would be great if you had awareness or experience of Opentext Exstream Designer/Design Manager v16.4 (particularly Templates, Object, Rules, Variables and creation of Output). But we are going to give you training in OTX technologies in this role, so don't worry if not.

  • VB Script
  • Production of Batch scripts
  • Packaging, delivery and storage of the application.
  • Knowledge of Exstream Installation and upgrade process, including licence requirements and associated products
  • SQL Server Management Studio
  • XML Spy for creating XSD and XML structure. Ability to map Columnar, Delimited, and XML data files
  • Setting up and maintaining batch environments for OpenText Exstream
  • Familiar with inserts and barcode setup
  • Understanding of report file and variable reset timing
  • Different output formats AFP & PDF

Desirable skills

You know what desirable means. These are just nice to have, so don't worry if you don't have them in your locker right now. Hopefully they give some extra insight into how we work here too.

  • Demonstrable experience working with Software Engineering collaboration tools such as Jira, Confluence, Slack
  • Demonstrable experience of Behaviour Driven Development with tools like Cucumber
  • Experience of modifying and maintaining systems and code developed by other Software Engineers
  • Experience building public facing and internal REST
