Basic Purpose:

The Vice President, Director of Procurement is the head of strategic and operational sourcing for Eaton Vance and its affiliates and is responsible for overall procurement strategy across a number of commodities, encompassing $200M+ in spend.   The Director will manage a department of four senior procurement professionals in Boston and Seattle.  The Director will lead all firm-wide procurement efforts to enable internal business partners to effectively and efficiently meet business objectives and maximize the value they receive from suppliers.  The Director will oversee all procurement efforts – demand management, supply strategy, supplier identification, sourcing execution, contract negotiation, delivery planning, purchase execution and ongoing performance management.  The Director will ensure that sourcing and procurement strategy aligns with senior management views on long-term cost structure, operating margin leverage and supplier and contract risk.  The Director and the team will foster productive and strategic supplier relationships, maintain our firm’s positive and long-standing reputation and ensure that the firm’s sourcing strategy lines up with the dynamics of the investment management industry at large.  The demands of the position and nature of the work require the Director to actively work on her/his own deals and projects while managing the overall work of the team.

The Director will also seek to increase spend under management and promote the use of the new SAP Ariba source-to-pay platform with both internal business partners and external suppliers.  The Director will provide strategic direction on Ariba functionality and use the tool to enable best practices and process improvement as well as develop robust reporting and ongoing KPI measurement.   The Director will be expected to work collaboratively with partners in accounts payable, finance, legal, vendor risk, information technology and market data as well as with members of the firm’s executive management committee.  Ultimately, the Director will continue the transformation of the function into a centralized and strategic sourcing center-of-excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as both player and coach across all facets of the procurement lifecycle; “rolling up the sleeves”
  • Implement procurement best practices and transformation activities
  • Create ongoing value with a best-in-class supply base and strong supplier relationships
  • Identify and realize cost-saving and cost-reduction opportunities
  • Develop corporate-wide procurement strategy and program including policy, long-term cost structure management, vendor consolidation and goal development
  • Manage procurement staff in sourcing, contracting, transactional purchasing, supplier management, and miscellaneous internal procurement support activities
  • Develop of both short- and long-term goals and the implementation of KPIs to measure ongoing performance
  • Manage the skills and competency development of procurement staff while staying current with procurement and industry trends
  • Lead cross-functional teams to help manage high spend/high risk commodities such as information technology and financial market data
  • Understand and implement appropriate financial and risk controls
  • Participate in business case development and financial analysis
  • Lead sourcing-based efforts in ongoing SAP Ariba program, determining ways to best leverage current and future functionality; act as evangelist for SAP Ariba and integrated source-to-pay
  • Liaise with executives and senior management to partner, assess business needs and execute against spending and supply objectives
  • Sell and reinforce procurement’s value proposition at the firm and run procurement like a well-run professional services business

Job Requirements:

  • 15-20 years of progressive procurement experience, preferably in financial services, banking or insurance
  • Bachelor’s degree.  Master’s degree in business/finance or equivalent professional experience in financial services/investment industry
  • Procurement- and industry-based certifications a plus
  • In-depth knowledge of sourcing and procurement principles and best practices
  • Deep knowledge of financial services market data ecosystem and regulatory requirements a significant plus
  • Experience in building a procurement function, developing a detailed strategic plan and managing multiple procurement professionals across a number of commodities
  • Understanding of fully integrated source-to-pay cycle and systems, SAP Ariba experience (or equivalent platform) helpful
  • Experience with advanced financial analysis, including NPV, rate/volume and financial statement impact analysis
  • Change management skills and self-awareness to take varying approaches with a

    dynamic set of stakeholders (e.g., expert model vs. facilitative model)

  • Excellent communication and listening skills; Ability to work cross-functionally; Comfort and experience discussing with and presenting to C-suite
  • Knowledge and experience with vendor and enterprise risk management
  • Strong negotiation skills for significant commercial deals
  • Understanding of standard contractual terms and conditions to mitigate legal risk
  • Strategic and analytical mindset with the ability to consider non-traditional approaches as the function, our needs and our industry evolves
  • Position will require regular (quarterly) travel to Boston, Seattle and Minneapolis with  occasional travel to other affiliate locations in New York, Atlanta, and Washington, DC
