Department Profile
Professionals within Legal and Compliance provide a wide range of services to our business units. They might help to structure a complex and sensitive cross-border transaction; advise on a new product introduction; develop a training program or defuse an investor dispute. They preserve the firm's invaluable reputation for integrity and protect the firm from sanctions with policies and procedures that meet regulatory requirements around the world. They also strive to maintain cooperative relationships with governmental policy makers and the regulatory and self-regulatory agencies that govern the firm's businesses.

Primary Responsibilities
The Information Management Attorney will have global responsibility for advising on issues related to information handling, storage, access, retention and disposition across all business lines. Specifically, the Information Management Attorney will:

  • Coordinate with Morgan Stanley's Information Management group to provide retention guidance regarding technology systems, physical records and business line policies and procedures
  • Advise on global legal and regulatory record retention requirements, including US broker-dealer and swap dealer obligations
  • Advise on policies and procedures related to information management, including voice recording and use of the internet and electronic messaging systems
  • Manage and maintain the Firm's Master Retention Schedule
  • Review electronic messaging platforms, including social networking applications, to advise on appropriate use and retention requirements
  • Provide recordkeeping guidance on third-party agreements as well as for mergers, acquisitions and divestitures transactions


Qualifications:

Skills required (essential)
  • J.D. with a minimum of 7 years of experience at a law firm, or in-house
  • Financial services experience preferred
  • Knowledge of relevant recordkeeping rules, including SEC Rule 17a-4 and CFTC Rule 1.31
  • Excellent writing, editing and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with senior management directly
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently in an efficient and effective manner
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a group or independent setting
