Sr Data Transformation Analyst II
JOC - the leading global provider of container shipping and other freight transport business-critical report and analysis - seeks a senior data transformation analyst who can provide fast, accurate and easy-to-understand analysis and graphics to support the subscription-based intelligence provider. In addition to completing data queries for editorial staff and tracking trends independently, the data analyst will monitor and expand on the JOC Shipping and Logistics Pricing Hub, write special reports analyzing ranking of ports, container lines and other freight nodes.
JOC, the online arm of the 190-year-old Journal of Commerce, is a subscription-based analysis and data service that provides shippers and transportation providers with information crucial to conducting their businesses. The website, which is read daily by thousands of users globally, thanks to its international staff who have a deep understanding of the industry, is part of IHS Markit, a publicly-listed business intelligence provider.
-- Complete quick turnaround data queries for editorial staff using PIERS, and other IHS Markit maritime databases. Communicate with editorial staff when the data queries will be completed.
-- Create multiple charts per day for inclusion in JOC stories, in scenarios where data is the driver of the story and in other scenarios when no analysis is required, just chart creation to add data and visualization to stories. Master JOC chart style, which is aimed at creating clarity and allowing for immediate understanding of key points by the reader, and have charts consistently adhere to that.
-- Research and write special reports drawn from major data trends and rankings of container lines, ports, and other transport nodes and modes.
-- Obtain a working knowledge of the full range of IHS Markit databases that could be leveraged in support of JOC analysis. Interact with internal IHS Markit owners of databases to obtain permission to use their data if needed and to share with them how we've put their data to use. Interact with colleagues throughout IHS Markit to access, understand and leverage this data to create original content for JOC and to draw attention to IHS data, intelligence, and services.
-- Ensure completeness, timeliness and consistency for 200+ data sets collected for the use of JOC. This does not involve physically collecting the data, as this will be done by a separate IHS Markit team, but ensuring that individual data sets are collected in a timely manner, are complete and up to date, and are represented accurately on JOC data dashboards and usable for analysis. Creating expectations we have of the data collection team to ensure data sets meet our standards.
-- Obtain new data series, which includes historical data and a process and relationship with the data provider to ensure a constant flow of new data. The purpose is to expand the JOC data series collection, expand JOC dashboards and expand opportunities for original data-driven content.
-- Look for opportunities on a daily basis to include data within JOC stories that don't originate with data, by following the daily JOC budget and interacting with the journalist team as needed.
-- Learn the JOC content management system (CMS), so as to be able to post charts and add data or other content into the body of stories.
-- Become active on social media, developing your Twitter and LinkedIn presence by regularly posting content and links to JOC content.
- 4-year Bachelor's degree in communications, data analysis or related field.
- Demonstrable experience in analytic trade data
- Proven record of handling multiple tasks and meeting deadlines.
- High Excel proficiency and chart creation
- Experience in developing and implementing data quality metrics and thresholds.
