The Monks survey covers medium and small financial institutions only, rather than big investment banks.

The bonuses of senior equity salesmen jumped to 55% from 41%, while equities traders received 31%, up from 22%, says the May 2001 survey.

Senior Eurobond traders, however, received a bonus of 42% of salary, down from 50% in 2000. Bonuses of medium-level eurobond traders were down to 25% from 35%.

The salaries of most equities and bond staff rose over the year, in some cases by as much as 10%.

Monks said that in 2002 bonuses of equities specialists might fall, because of volatility in the stock markets this year.
