Garban, the integrated money and securities broker, has announced the appointment of Gillian Switalski as company secretary and director of group legal services. Switalski was most recently director of corporate services at national lottery operator Camelot. She was a main board director of Camelot International Services and company secretary for the Camelot Foundation. At Garban, Switalski will play an important role in future development, following its recent de-merger from United News and Media. John Heimann will lead the Financial Stability Institute as its first chairman. Established by the Bank for International Settlements earlier this year, the institute was set up to strengthen financial systems worldwide. Heimann will retire as chairman of Global Financial Institutions and as a member of the firm's executive management committee. He has been at Merrill since 1984 and GFI chairman since 1991. Sir Andrew Large, deputy chairman of Barclays and Barclays Bank, will assume non-executive responsibilities from January 1 1999. Large used to be chairman of the UK Securities and Investment Board. John Molloy has been appointed managing director of Colonial UK, the UK arm of the international financial services provider Colonial. He was previously managing director of Prudential New Zealand.
