Before joining Barclays Capital in March 1998, Appleyard was ambassador to China from 1994 to 1997. He has also held senior positions in the Cabinet Office and Foreign & Commonwealth Office in London, Moscow and New Delhi. Between 1986 and 1989 he was ambassador to Hungary. Sir Leonard will work alongside Hans-Jörg Rudloff, chairman of Barclays Capital. Megan Richardson, director of group planning, policy and governance at Barclays, is to leave the bank next month. Richardson's resignation follows those of the former chief executive Martin Taylor and Elizabeth Wade, director of corporate communications. Herman Van der Wyck, 65, vice-chairman of Warburg Dillon Read is to retire at the end of March. The move leaves Ken Costa as sole vice-chairman. After a career at RoyalDutch/Shell, Van der Wyck joined SG Warburg in 1969, becoming a director in 1973. In 1984 he became joint chairman of SG Warburg, and in 1987 vice-chairman of SG Warburg Group. Following the merger with Swiss Bank Corporation, he assumed the role of vice chairman of SBC Warburg.
