Eugene Shen, the managing director of the global financial institutions group at AT Kearney, has hired Gerson to develop and lead the global financial markets practice, focusing on the investment banking and private equity world. AT Kearney has recently targeted the European search market, opening an office in London some 18 months ago that now employs seven consultants.
The departures in New York come as a blow to Baines Gwinner, which has been seeking to build out its existing operations in London, New York and Hong Kong with further hires. It had been expanding aggressively even before its merger deal with Heidrick & Struggles collapsed earlier this year.
Business at all three Baines Gwinner branches - headhunting, training and career management - is reported to have been going well, according to the search firm.
Jonathan Baines, founder and managing director, said: "We have turned over more in the first half of this year than in the whole of 1999 and the assignments keep coming in."
Baines Gwinner plans significant further growth and the extension of its reputation further afield. The headhunter was recently ranked as a top banking and financial services search firm by the London Professional Recruitment Guide, and Baines himself was named as one of a group of expert individuals working at the senior end of banking and financial services search.
