Mack, who resigned as president of Morgan Stanley in January, has been reshuffling CSFB's top management and searching for cost cuts in response to plummeting investment banking revenues.

He is also trying to restore the investment bank's reputation among regulators around the world amid concerns about CSFB's freewheeling culture.

Nelson will leave at the end of the first quarter of 2002, after more than 30 years in investment banking.
