Hedge fund sales pros strike it rich

Salespeople working with hedge funds were some of the best remunerated in 2005. Recruiters say they can trace their good fortune to a lack of experienced staff in the area.

According to the latest salary survey from financial markets recruitment firm Napier Scott, the average salesperson or and marketer working with hedge fund clients earned considerably more last year than derivatives sales and marketers working with corporates and financial institutions.

The survey, which covered 2,500 people across a range of sectors globally, found for example, that executive directors selling interest rate derivatives to hedge funds earned an average 40% more than their rivals selling interest rate derivatives to corporate clients, and 22% more than those selling to financial institutions.

Shaun Springer, chief executive officer of Napier Scott, attributes the variation to a lack of hedge fund sales talent. "In terms of size and market activity, hedge funds are a comparatively new client base," he says. "Banks are finding themselves increasingly short of proven hedge fund sales marketers with established clients. Prices are being pushed up."

The discrepancy is only noticeable for experienced staff, with associates and associate directors typically able to earn more selling to financial institutions or corporates than to hedge funds.
