Hegde fund Balyasny’s latest Hong Kong PM is famously nice
Working at a hedge fund can be lucrative. If you’re a portfolio manager, it can be lucrative due to your performance. If you’re working for a portfolio manager (PM), it can be lucrative depending on your PM. And some have better reputations than others.

Alex Chau joined Balyasny last month as a PM in Hong Kong, covering Asia-Pacific and European financials. He joined the firm from Millennium, where he ran a market neutral Asian financials pod as a senior portfolio manager.
Chau’s new analysts at Balyasny will probably be quite happy to see him come. One of his former analysts, Nishant Shah, retired last year at the ago of 35 and credited “lots of luck and generous bosses” to his ability to do so. In his retirement announcement, Shah called Chau “one of the sharpest minds, fairest supervisors and humblest personalities I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.” High praise indeed.
He is currently working as a CIO for Indian investment firm J Curve Capital, but he did note that he planned to work “some philanthropic passion projects & entrepreneurial journeys” after retiring, so it doesn’t seem to be out of necessity.
