Jane Street's AI jobs have more going for them than $300k salaries
Jane Street, the electronic trading firm with fingers in many pies, likes hires to machine learning engineers and AI researchers. And they, in turn, should like to work for Jane Street.

It's not just the pay, which is predictably generous at $300k in salaries alone for machine learning engineers and researchers in New York. It's also the compute, which Jane Street has a lot of.
In AI terms, compute ("computational power") refers both to hardware and to infrastructure like GPUs that enable a system to perform calculations. Business Insider reported last month that access to compute has become a critical consideration for AI engineers choosing wear to work. At Jane Street, they will be rich in this metric. And they will get richer.
A year ago, we suggested that Jane Street might have 5,000 GPUs. Since then, things seem to have picked up a bit. A current vacancy for a machine learning researcher, says Jane Street has "tens of thousands" of high end GPUs and a "rapidly growing computing cluster."
Jane Street's cluster includes access to NVIDIA's next-generation Vera Rubin technology. The firm secured access to this last month after investing $1bn in Coreweave, an AI-native cloud computing platform, and spending a further $6bn to access Coreweave's services. Jane Street also has investments in Claude-creator Anthropic, and although the electronic trading firm wasn't mentioned among the lucky places that got to test Claude Opus 4.7 last week (only Balyasny appeared to receive this perk among financial services firms), it's unlikely to be ignorant of the new model either.
For AI engineers who care about such things, Jane Street's growing level of compute puts it among the market leaders. XTX Markets also likes to boast about GPUs, and has 25,000 of them and 650 petabytes of usable storage according to its current job advertisements.
Like Jane Street, XTX is moving to secure its computational future. Last year, XTX announced that it was building five data centres in Finland, costing $1bn. They're due to be completed in 2026.
XTX also pays well. And it has a fake space ship in its London office. Both matter, but maybe GPUs matter more nowadays.
