JPMorgan hires equity research MD from another office-loving bank in London
Late last year, Berenberg's equity research team saw some exits, amid complaints of the bank's eagerness for staff to spend five days in the office per week. Now, it's lost one of its senior equity researchers, but time spent in the office is very clearly not a factor for leaving.
Paul Buller, who headed equity research for Berenberg's global industrials team, has now joined JPMorgan as an MD and head of capital goods equity research. He spent five and a half years at the German bank, initially joining as a senior analyst.
Buller's background is eclectic, befitting of an equity researcher. He began his career as an apprentice technician at BMW/Land Rover, then became a systems engineer for typhoon aircraft, then a member of the UK Ministry of Defence's Saudi Arabian Armed Forces Project Office. He first entered equity research with Barclays in London, running its European aerospace and defence research team; while there, however, he also taught advanced corporate finance and M&A at Columbia University. He also had a brief foray running investor relations for sustainable energy firm Schneider Electric in Paris.
Buller's new gig at JPMorgan comes shortly after the bank announced that all staff have to spend five days per week in the office. Senior equity research people are generally more likely to want to work from home than other senior bankers. Berenberg, however, is thought to have always had its equity research team in the office throughout the week. Buller, therefore, will need no lecturing on the values of knowledge sharing and answering Jamie Dimon's Friday calls.
