London BNP MD moves to Paris for SocGen privates team

Private capital is all the rage these days. From private credit to private placements, privates are at the tip of everyone’s tongue. So, if you’re big in privates, it might be the best time ever to swing around and look for a new job.

Julien Scemama joined SocGen in Paris this week to head up its equity private placements team in EMEA. He arrived from rival BNP Paribas in London, where he spent two years and was a managing director in private placements. He was at Nomura and Rothschild before that.

Private placements are a fundraising style, usually used by private companies, in which a bulk number of equity or debt is sold to private investors. Unlike the (superficially) similar private credit world, private placements are mainly investment-grade; corporates prefer private placements to IPOs as it allows them to not register with the SEC.

It’s a field that’s likely to grow; CNBC reported that David Solomon said in January, “it’s not fun being a public company.” He also noted the availability of private capital “at scale.” Banks strengthened private placements teams in 2024; Nomura hired Moelis MD Daniel Muldoon to lead its private placements team, Houlihan Lokey hired Deutsche Bank's head of growth capital Ashish Patel, and William Blair brought in Credit Suisse private funds MD Connor O'Keefe.
