One of Hudson River's three partners left and no one noticed

If you're wondering where Oaz Nir, one of the three original partners at high frequency firm Hudson River Trading (HRT), is right now, we cannot tell you. But we can say that he is no longer at HRT.

Nir officially left HRT in January 2025 according to his FINRA registration. In a statement on his disappearance, Hudson River said: “Last summer, Oaz announced that he was stepping down as a partner at HRT. We thank Oaz for his contributions and leadership over the last 15 years. We wish him well in his retirement and look forward to his continued engagement with the HRT community.”

Nir's silent exit leaves two remaining partners at HRT: Prashant Lal and Jason Carroll. All three had worked together for 15 years, until recently. Carroll was a founding partner, but Lal and Nir joined in 2010.

Why did Nir leave? There are some potentially spurious and entirely unconfirmed suggestions of disagreements with other partners, but it's most probable that he simply sailed into the sunset with his gains from 15 years at the top of a top high frequency trading firm.

Sources say Nir's exit coincided with that of senior people from the HRT options trading team. However, the two things are though to be unrelated. Like other funds, Hudson River has been pushing into medium frequency trading. One source said Nir helped spearhead that expansion. "When you hire non-technical people you can't put them through technical interviews and it's harder to evaluate who's good or not," they claimed.

Goodbye Nir. Wherever you may be. It's understood that HRT will not be promoting anyone to replace him.
