Murray Johnstone has appointed Douglas Thomson as an investment director and head of UK equities, effective from September 8. Thompson will have overall responsibility for Murray Income Trust, the UK equity large cap team, the smaller companies team and the dealing desk. Thompson joins from the UK equity research team of Robert Fleming, where he was responsible for developing UK equity strategy for fund managers. He has also previously worked with Scottish Equitable and Dunedin Fund Managers, where, between 1994 and 1996, he was head of UK equities. The move follows the departure of Peter Hewitt and a strategic review set in place by chief investment officer Leslie Robb last November. Premier Fund Managers has appointed Greg Mahon as private client portfolio manager. Mahon joins from Murray Johnstone Private Investors limited, where from 1993 he was responsible for managing private client portfolios. In addition he helped establish the new private client office at the Glasgow headquarters in 1998. Mahon also previously worked for Smith New Court (now Merrill Lynch Mercury Asset Management) in both market-making and the institutional broking side. Premier has more than €370m of funds under management. John Hughes has been appointed an adviser to the investment management consultancy practice of Ernst & Young. Hughes was formerly managing director of operations at Invesco Global.
