Three quarters of financial services employees said in a survey that they spend rather than save their bonuses.
The most popular buy is a new home or home improvments, cited by 27% of people. Second on the list is holidays (23%). Only 3% plan to buy a new car, but two-thirds said they would make a donation to charity.
One third of people said a lower than expected bonus would cause them to look for another job. More than a quarter (27%) said it would make them work harder, while nearly a fifth (19%) said they would complain. Eleven per cent of people say they would "grin and bear it".
The survey was conducted by financial recruitment company CitiPeople and received 550 responses worldwide, mostly from the City of London.
