A detailed breakdown of Morgan Stanley's 2016 managing director promotions
Morgan Stanley has just unveiled its latest managing director promotions for 2016. Unlike Goldman Sachs, the list is not replete with millennials – most new promotions have been with the bank for many, many years and have worked their way up the ranks.
So, what does it take? Well, it helps to be based out of New York – 73 of the 156 new promotions were in the city, compared to 28 in London. Last year, 72 were based in New York and 36 were in the UK capital.
Morgan Stanley has also bridged the gap between its investment banking advisory division and the traders, salesmen and researchers in markets. In a year when M&A bankers ruled the roost and Morgan Stanley fired 25% of its fixed income team, it’s promoted more people in the markets division than in M&A and other investment banking functions, our research suggests.
And, despite its reputation for wealth management, technologists come in third. We’ve put anyone who works in a tech role, regardless of the division, in this category.
Here, according to our research, are where the new crop of managing directors at Morgan Stanley work:
Alex Abagian, equity capital markets, Australia
